Vermont Playwrights Circle TenFest 2023 Call for Scripts

DEADLINE: Midnight, Saturday, April 1, 2023

The Vermont Playwrights Circle is accepting scripts for our annual TenFest, a festival of ten 10-minute plays written by Vermont playwrights. TenFest 2023 will take place this year for two weekends: Thursday, August 10 – Sunday, August 13 and Thursday, August 17 – Sunday, August 20. Any Vermonter may submit a play. We consider you a Vermonter if you have lived here for three consecutive months at any point in your life.

We want NO MORE than ten minutes’ worth of play. This does not necessarily work out to ten pages of play, so be sure to read your finished play aloud, not rushing, accounting for anticipated action, and time it. We will not accept plays that are longer than ten minutes.

Plays should have a maximum of four characters.

All plays must follow this year's theme of “A Lightbulb Moment.” All plays also need to include a special line that is any variation on a “Eureka!” exclamation. For purposes here, we are defining a “Eureka!” exclamation as “An interjection used to celebrate a discovery or an invention.” We will accept a visual in place of a verbal moment, i.e., a lightbulb turning on.

Plays need to use minimal set pieces and props, and should be easily staged, so please keep that in mind when writing and submitting.

Format your play using proper playwriting format. Check out the Dramatist’s Guild Format information here: https://www.dramatistsguild.com/sites/default/files/2019-12/modernformat-New.pdfn

All plays are judged anonymously. Please make sure that your name or other identifying information does not appear anywhere on the script. Submit a separate cover page with your name, contact information, and title of your play.

We will accept only ONE submission per playwright.

Please submit your play via email to: vtplaywrightscircle@gmail.com

Include the following TWO documents, as a PDF:

    1) A Cover Page that includes:

    • Your full name
    • Mailing address
    • Phone number(s)
    • email address

    2) Your play that includes:

    • A character list. (Please keep these simple, and when possible, flexible concerning gender, physical description, etc.)
    • A brief synopsis of your play.
    • Include the title of the play and page numbers in the header of your script, but do not include your name.

Submit your play NO LATER than midnight on Saturday, April 1, 2023.

We love to have playwrights who wish to collaborate with us when possible. While this is not mandatory, possibilities for involvement could include coming to auditions or a producer’s meeting, joining us for the first read through, attending rehearsals, being in contact with the director, attending performances, including our Saturday Playwrights Reception, etc. We are always happy to get some author feedback and involvement.

The Vermont Playwrights Circle reserves the right to choose less than or more than ten plays, or to choose none.

    What do we do?

We promote original theater works written by Vermont Writers. We consider a Vermont Writer anyone who has lived in Vermont for a period of three consecutive months at any time in their lives. We believe that in living a season in Vermont, people create lasting connections to the state that they take with them when the move, and we recognize that our seasonal community members contribute a value to our local artist community.
